Finished measurements

  • Women’s size M (approx)
  • Chest circumference: 96 cm / 37¾ in
  • Body length: 58 cm / 22¾ in
  • Sleeve length: 47 cm / 18½ in

Materials

  • approx. 800 g / 28 oz / 1040 m / 1140 yards of Novita Isoveli in moss green (#034)
  • For body: 4.5mm (US 7) straight needles, 5.5mm (US 9) straight and circular knitting needles (or size to obtain gauge)
  • For sleeves: 4.5mm (US 7) and 5.5mm (US 9) short circular needle or dpn’s (or size to obtain gauge)

Gauge: 18 sts x 23 rows = 10 cm / 4 in (in stocking st)

Body

Cast on 178 sts on smaller straight needles. Work in garter stitch for 3 cm / 1¼ in. You can also cast on the circular needle but with straight ones there’s no purling! :) Minor drawback with the short hem seam, though.

Change to the larger size circular needle and work in stocking stitch. Join to make a round (mark the beginning of the row!) and dec 1 st at both ends of the row (= 176 sts). Work even until piece measures 35 cm / 13¾ in.

Front

Armhole shaping: Change to larger straight needles. Cast off 3 sts, knit 85 sts. Slip the remaining 88 sts (= the back) to a holder. Cast off 3 sts at the beginning of the next row. Knit 14 rows, while dec 1 st at each end of next and every following alternate row until 68 sts remaining. Continue until piece measures 51 cm / 20 in (armhole measures 16 cm / 6¼ in), with 68 sts remaining.

Neck shaping: Work both sides at the same time. Work 27 sts. Slip the next 14 sts to a holder. With a second ball of yarn, work remaining 27 sts. At each neck edge, cast off every other row 3 sts once, 2 sts twice and 1 st twice, until 18 sts remain.

At the same time work shoulder shaping: Work even until piece measures 57 cm / 22½ in (armhole measures 22 cm / 8½ in). *(Cast off 9 sts at armhole edge of next row. Work 1 row even.)* 2 times.

Back

Armhole shaping: Continue with the 88 sts from the holder. Cast off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Knit 14 rows, while dec 1 st at each end of next and every following alternate row until 68 sts remaining. Continue until piece measures 56 cm / 22 in (armhole measures 21 cm / 8¼ in), with 68 sts remaining.

Neck shaping: Work both sides at the same time. Work 25 sts. Slip the next 18 sts to a holder. With a second ball of yarn, work remaining 25 sts. At each neck edge, cast off every other row 3 sts once and 2 sts twice, until 18 sts remain.

Work shoulder shaping as for front.

Sleeves

Cast on 41 sts on the smaller short circular needle (or dpn’s). Mark the last stitch of the row. Work in garter stitch for 3 cm / 1¼ in.

Change to size the larger circular needle (or dpn’s) and worki in stocking stitch. Work even until piece measures 9 cm / 3½ in.

Inc 1 st at each end of next row making the increases before and after the marked stitch, then every following 5th row 15 times to 73 sts.

Work even until sleeve measures 47 cm / 18½ in.

Shape cap: Cast off 4 sts at beg of next row. Turn the work (ie. do not work in circular knitting any longer), cast off 3 sts at beg of next row. Dec 1 st at each end of every row 7 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 9 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every row 7 times. Cast off remaining 20 sts loosely.

Neck band

Sew left shoulder of front and back together.

With right side of work facing, pick up and knit (approximately) 89 sts:

  • 10 sts from right back neck edge
  • 18 sts from back neck holder
  • 10 sts from left back neck edge
  • 1 st from left shoulder seam
  • 18 sts from left front neck edge
  • 14 sts from front neck holder
  • 18 sts from right front neck edge

Knit 1 row even. Decrease 7 sts in the following row: knit 13 sts, *(knit 2 tog, knit 3 sts)* 3 times, knit 29 sts, *(knit 2 tog, knit 2 sts)* 4 times, knit 16 sts (= 82 sts).

Knit in garter stitch until neck band measures 3 cm / 1¼ in. Cast off loosely.

Finishing

Sew right shoulder and neck band seam. Sew on sleeves, sew the short hem seam (if you cast on straight needles). Weave in all loose ends.
