So I didn’t quite finish the Golden Kraken mittens in time for the Season 2 Game of Thrones premiere. Close enough, though — they’re done now!

Anyone interested in the pattern? Or test knitting?

This pair of finely detailed mittens is inspired by 600 year old Chinese porecelain vases created during the Ming Dynasty. Like the original artworks, these mitts are adorned with geometic and organic images such as dragons and florals.

I’m working on / designing a pair of Game of Thrones inspired stranded mittens called The Golden Kraken. Hopefully I’ll get them finished by the time Season 2 starts on April 1st. They’re turning out a bit too snug but the yarn is superwash so I’m hoping it relaxes a bit when blocked.

Wow! These are amazing. The pattern is on Ravelry: Octopus Mittens by Emily Peters.

Another project on the go.

So far, these are just basic black socks for my boyfriend using the Knitty Universal Sock Formula. Once they’re knit up, though, I’m going to duplicate stitch some Bubble Bobble dragons on them!

There was a free Bubble Bobble mittens pattern on Ravelry but the designer has since removed it. :/ Luckily I have the pattern saved in my Ravelry library but it’s pretty easy to reverse engineer the charts from the photos of finished items.

And even more mittens!

Some more mittens!

  • Birdy Bird Mittens
  • Pattern: Bird Mitten chart (free Ravelry download) by Hanneke Sieben
  • Yarn: Novita Nalle in natural (#010) and chocolate (#673)
  • Needles: 3.0 mm
  • Mods: Left out the topmost bird because the mittens were starting to look too long for me. I’d use a finer yarn and tighter gauge next time.

Christmas knitting should probably be underway by now. Here’s a pair of mittens I made for my mom as a Christmas present a couple of years ago.

  • Burning Hearts Mittens
  • Pattern: Heart mittens (Ravelry) by Ansku
  • Yarn: Novita 7 Veljestä in black, red, and orange
  • Needles: 3.5 mm dpn’s
  • Mods: picot edge, omitted ribbing and did three repeats of the first heart pattern with the middle row mirrored, black as main color in both palm and back, 2 contrasting colors (red and orange) switching them every repeat of the back pattern

So cute!

Before continuing with the green Tailored cardigan, I feel like taking a break with some smaller project. I was going through my Ravelry stash over the summer, putting up pictures of pictureless stuff, even the leftover skeins, and noticed that I had lots of small balls of different colors in this worsted-weight yarn. Colors I wouldn’t normally wear on their own but might just work together in some small accessory. Like mittens.
I’m not really into the whole Latvian mitten or Selbuvotter thing, maybe because I haven’t tried it myself. And most of those patterns are for fingering weight yarn anyway. I’m not really experienced with stranded knitting so I better start small, or big, as it were. I did find some great worsted-weight patterns, picked one, played around with the colors a bit and voila: Burning Hearts Mittens.

And I totally get the infatuation with stranded knitting now. It’s so mesmerizing watching the picture emerge little by little, row by row. I want more!
