I’ve been to two fiber/crafts fairs recently that were very, very helpful in expanding the yarn and fiber stashes.
Left to right: Hopeasäie Gold (she’s on Etsy), Handu Ilu’s Special in green, and Handu 100% Merino Sock Yarn (red/gray). Handu is on Etsy, too!

Sparklies!

More sparklies! Four different colors of seed beads.

And finally, something for the wheel. Left to right: Knitlob’s Lair Polwarth, Lorna’s Laces Wool Top in “Huron”, Knitlob’s Lair Corriedale, and undyed oatmeal 100% Bluefaced Leicester (BFL). Tuulia of Knitlob’s Lair is also on Etsy but her shop is now empty. :/

Fandom Yarn Giveaway!

To preview my upcoming shop update on etsy, I’m going to do a little giveaway!

The WINNER will be able to choose one of the following:

1) Doctor Who Mini-Skein Pack containing five 10g (40yd) skeins in You Sexy Thing, Sonic Screwdriver, Time Vortex I, Time Vortex II, and Bowties are Cool.
2) Sherlock Holmes Mini-Skein Pack containing five 10g (40yd) skeins in A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Final Problem, and 221b Baker Street.
3) Hunger Games Mini-Skein Pack containing five 10g (40yd) skeins in Katniss Everdeen,  Gale Hawthorne, Primrose Everdeen, The Girl on Fire, and Peeta Mellark.
4) One 50g (200 yd) skein in Sarah Jane Smith
5) One 50g (200 yd) skein in Rowena Ravenclaw

(Whatever isn’t chosen will go up in my etsy shop soon after, so be sure to keep your eye out!)

All yarn is hand-dyed by myself on a sturdy 75% wool, 25% nylon sock-weight base. The yarn is superwash, but minimal bleeding is possible due to the hand-dyed nature of the yarn, so caution is urged when washing. All dyes are food-safe ;-)

Unfortunately, there are RULES:
-I’ll ship anywhere in the world.
-must REBLOG to enter, likes don’t count
-but no more than five (5) reblogs, more will get you disqualified.
-you don’t have to be following me :-) but feel free to if you want information on future shop updates!
-you should have your ask box open so I can contact you! If the winner doesn’t respond within 48 hours of notification, another winner will be chosen.
-contest ends at 11:59 PM US Central Time April 8th. Winner will be contacted April 9th.
-questions go here

Good Luck!

WANT!

Listening to the Just One More Row podcast has made me want to take up spinning again. I finished the singles of the Black Welsh I’d started in probably 2009 (seriously!) and then - for the first time - plied them on my wheel last night.

These skeins need to take a bath first, I’ll post specs later.

New pattern collection - and yarn! - from Brooklyn Tweed.

I found some old photos of the handspun yarn with which I made these three projects.

Handpaintedyarn.com merino roving in colorway “Wooden Rose”, spun on a Louet bottom-whorl spindle to about 100 g of lace-to-fingering-weight yarn.

Thinking about this combination: Meisi & madelinetosh tosh sock in colorway “composition book grey”. Yay or nay?

Hi Susanna-I want to make your Warm Winter Mittens, but I cant find the Novita Isoveli anywhere-any hints or substitutes?? Thanks!

From the big brands: Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool, Wool-Ease Chunky, or Patons Shetland Chunky are about the same weight and gauge. For a more luxurious version, try Manos del Uruguay Wool Clasica. Or try this Ravelry search and pick your favorite substitute! Remember to check yardage when substituting yarn.

Owls are supercute, I love this!

Owls are supercute, I love this!

Photos from the first International Dye in Public (DIP) Day event on September 2, 2011. We tried contact dyeing with natural dyes: cochineal, madder root, buckthorn bark, logwood, and yellow and red onion skins.

Wet, pre-mordanted yarn (with alum) was placed in a small ziploc bag with the dyestuffs, smushed around with a small amount of water, and then sealed airtight to prevent molding. Store in room temperature for up to 2 weeks, then rinse and hang to dry.

My samples are still developing. :) I’m curious to find out what comes of them! Hopefully not mold…

New yarn (and to-be yarn)… Merino roving from handpaintedyarn.com.
